It's Fastnacht Day!

Today is the day before the start of Lent, also known as Fat Tuesday for those planning Mardi Gras celebrations. But there’s another type of Fat Tuesday that is unique to Pennsylvania: Fastnacht Day.

The term Fastnacht comes from the German words “fast” and “night”.

Tradition holds that on this day, households use up all the fat and sugar in the house before lent begins. This practice also gives Fat Tuesday its name.

While Fastnacht’s originated in Germany they are now a popular part of Pennsylvania Dutch culture. So, don’t forget to indulge in one of Pennsylvania’s favorite treats and grab a Fastnacht!
